Main Causes and Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) refers to a condition that persistently affects an individual’s ability to get or maintain a firm erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. Several emotional and physical disorders contribute to erectile dysfunction. Nonetheless, certain medical and natural remedies play a fundamental role in the treatment of ED.

Main causes of erectile dysfunction

Endocrine diseases

The endocrine system produces hormones that regulate reproduction, sexual function, and metabolism. Endocrine diseases such as diabetes can contribute to erectile dysfunction. Chronic diabetes leads to nerve damage causing adverse effects on the sensitivity of the penis. Other conditions associated with diabetes, for instance, impaired blood flow can cause ED.

Cardiac-related conditions

Conditions that interfere with the heart and its function of pumping blood can cause ED. Insufficient blood flow to the penis affects its ability to erect. Hypertension and atherosclerosis conditions contribute to high risk of one suffering from ED.

Certain medications

Particular drugs are known to contribute to erectile dysfunction such as Flomax, Coreg, Prozac, Aldactone among others. Such medications can interfere with the normal blood flow leading to erectile dysfunction. However, unless advised by the doctor, you should not stop taking such medicines.

Emotional disorders and lifestyle

Penis erection occurs once a person has gone through the excitement phase that encompasses emotional response. Therefore, having psychological disorders can lead to erectile dysfunction. Depression and performance anxiety lead to increased risk of erectile dysfunction.

There exists an association between drug abuse and increased risk of erectile dysfunction. Such abused drugs include amphetamines and cocaine. Alcoholism also contributes to an individual’s inability to attain or maintain an erection.

Treatment of erectile dysfunction

Medical treatments

The most widely used and effective type of medication is the phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors including sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil, vardenafil, and avanafil. The PDE-5 inhibitors work temporarily by increasing blood flow to the penis leading to an erection. Tadalafil inhibitor’s effects last up to 36 hours while the other inhibitors work for around eight to 10 hours. Depending on the type of inhibitor and the prescribed dose, it takes 30-60 minutes for the drug to work. It is advisable to take PDE-5 inhibitors on an empty stomach to notice its effects quickly. Sexual stimulation triggers the drugs. Hence, you need to get aroused for it to work.

Other treatments include testosterone replacement, psychological counselling, blood vessel surgery, penile implants, etc.

Natural treatment

There are several natural remedies known to treat erectile dysfunction. Therefore, if you are against medical interventions, you might want to consider natural treatments. The natural remedies include pomegranate juice, acupuncture, and ginseng. Nutritional supplements like vitamin C, vitamin E, Zinc, flaxseed meal, etc. are known to treat ED. However, it is always important to seek your doctor’s advice before taking any natural treatment.

A healthy lifestyle is also significant in treating ED. Avoid alcohol intake and smoking, take regular exercises, eat healthy, lose an excess pound if overweight and maintain healthy relationships.
